Otter Brewery
Luppitt, Devon

Prestigious new facilities for a local, successful, brewer designed to blend in with the area of outstanding natural beauty in which the premises are located. The building is contemporary in its design which utilizes a steel frame with concrete floors. However its green credentials were significantly boosted by the use of the thermoplan zeigal system. This essentially is a honey comb block – in this case 425mm wide – which has extremely high insulation & strength properties.

The Architects, David Highet of Axminster, required a curved roof to be blanketed with sedum and in addition, large over hangs to allow protected material handling off the loading bays. This resulted in complicated two directional curves which had to be carefully designed and fabricated. This was developed in the workshop with the local steel fabricator, Quicks Engineering. The internal column layout was set to minimize hazard to facilitate the free movement of forklifts and other barrel handling equipment.
